Four Seasons - "Dody" 45 - 1967 - Flip side of "Beggin'" - 4 Seasons

The flip side to the famous "Beggin'". As I said earlier, I prefer this side to the hit myself. A very cool 4 Seasons song. It is rockin'!

Videos of fun!

Even though these videos are simple in format, they do take a good bit of time to make between the scanning, making an MP3 from the vinyl, converting, and uploading. However, it is fun and over time I'm going to go through my personal collection of 45's to find stuff that I would like to have an MP3 file of AND is under represented on youtube, so hopefully between stuff I have for sale and my own collection I should have useful content to post here for a good while.

The Fashions - Fairy Tales - 1961 - Elmor-301 - Barbara English - Girl G...

Great old 45 from Girl Group The Fashions, featuring Barbara English. Released on Elmor in 1961. Flip side is "Please Let It Be Me".

The Fashions - Please Let It Be Me - Girl Group - 45 - Elmor - 1961

Great old 45 from Girl Group The Fashions, featuring Barbara English. Released on Elmor in 1961. Flip side is "Fairy Tales". Neither of the songs are conventionally catchy in my opinion but both really enjoyable none the less. I think this is my favorite of the two songs.

Bad luck at the library...

Photobucket

Nicole & I went to the library a few days ago. Lakewood totally renovated their library a few years ago and I haven't been there since they made it all nice... so I was game. First we checked out the magazines. I was praying they had some terribly expensive Formula 1 magazines I haven't been able to afford for about 3 years, but alas, they did not... so I picked up a copy of Goldmine and leafed thru that for a bit.

I then had Nicole show me around the rest of the place and from there we decided to check out their massive CD collection. I only skimmed cos it was hot as hell in that room but I found about 6 CD's that looked interesting. I was wrong.

First I got this compilation that I thought was of original Bubblegum-Pop, but it was a covers album of 25 songs. Most of them sucked, though I found about 8 that I'd listen to again.

The next piece of crap I picked was another comp, "Children of of Nuggets" which sucked and was so scratched that the few good songs I found skipped even on my computer.

After that abomination I found Red Crayola's first album. I think I kept 3 of the 6 songs that didn't have too much "freaking out" on them. I could not care less about the noise crap on there, but when they bothered to compose songs I do find their sounds/songs terribly interesting and somewhat innovative for the times... but there's too much noisy crap that does nothing for me.

Then I got tricked by a Loved Ones CD, thinking I was getting a disc from the 60's Aussie group. I got the 90's version of a band with the same name, but they looked all throwback. Talk about false advertising!

I was then tricked AGAIN thinking I was picking up a comp of OLD Flaming Groovies tunes while 14 of the 18 tracks were NOT from the 60's! At this point I was getting infuriated!

After that debacle, the last two CD's shaped up.

I got REM's "Accelerate" album as that is the ONLY album from REM that I never got on CD or LP (though that will change as soon as I can help it) as the album came out in 2008 and just sorta slipped under my radar. I put that on and it was great, as I normally expect from REM.

So finally some good was coming out of my picks!

The last thing I got was The Raspberries "Refreshed" EP from 2000, sans Eric Carmen, so I was mildly skeptical to begin with, however I'm a fan and appreciator of Wally Bryson, so I knew the songs had a decent chance of not being a pile, and luckily I was right.

While I partially blame all the library stickers on the CD cases and the fact that I couldn't actually look at liner notes and check copyright dates and such for my horrendous picks, I was still really let down by my picks, however I'll dig in again to their CD's when I return these in a few days as I sell 99% of the vinyl that I buy and I've got a giant hard drive and I wouldn't mind some new tunes, if I can find some decent ones.

The magical know-all of Google!

Photobucket

Since it has only been about 24 hours since I started uploading these videos of seemingly rare, obscure and mildly forgotten songs I was surprised to get this message from Google/YouTube stating this:

Dear waxpumpkin,

Your video may have content that is owned or licensed by Warner Chappell.

No action is required on your part; however, if you are interested in learning how this affects your video, please visit the Content ID Matches section of your account for more information.

Sincerely,

I got that message concerning Eddie Smith & The Hornets "Border Beat" (which means "Upturn" must really be the B side!), both Damnation of Adam Blessing songs, and of course the 4 Seasons "Beggin'".

I truly hope I don't run in to trouble and get videos taken down because I really don't feel like having to find a new place to host the stuff + the main reason I put the stuff on youtube as opposed to a similar site was so people other than potential ebay buyers wanting to virtually play test some of these higher end 45's could enjoy the music as well. If I start being hassled by youtube due to copyrights and junk I will have to find another site that isn't trying to rule the world and rely more on this silly little blog for sharing these cool old tunes.

Kent Morrill - I Cannot Live Without Her - 1969 - Ex-Wailers

Interestingly, when I first heard this song I thought to myself that vocally this dude sounded a little like Roy Orbison and then when I was doing some research on old Kent I found out that later in life he was one of the leading Orbison impersonators in the country and was much regarded for his quality as not only could he pull the look off, vocally he wasn't too shabby either.

Morrill original sang with Tacoma, WA's Wailers, best known for their hit "Tall Cool One".

Kent passed away in April 2011 at the age of 70.

We currently have this fine record for sale in our ebay store!

Kent Morrill - The Wind Calls The Wild To It's Own - 1969 - Ex-Wailers

This is an interesting 45 sung by the ex-vocalist for the late 1950's early "garage band" The Wailers out of Tacoma, WA. This record is country-tinged soft rock that is really sorrowful and sad. Upon hearing the 45 originally I wasn't really blown away by the songs and didn't think much of them one way or the other, however between my original play testing, then dumping the vinyl on to the computer, making the "video" and making sure the MP3 sounded OK, I have grown to appreciate both songs and over the past few days have had them stuck in my head. They are the sneaky kind of catchy pop that you don't expect to get stuck in your head as the tracks are very unassuming and also kinda sad... and this is the more upbeat of the two songs!

Morrill passed away in April, 2011 shortly after his 70'th birthday.

Eddie Smith With The Hornets - Border Beat - 1959 Rockabilly 45

This is the flip side to the classic "Upturn" tune. This song reminds me of Duane Eddy, which is a good thing because Duane and his twang are almost always pleasant... but this tune is nowhere near as bad ass as its brother on the other side of the record!

Eddie Smith With The Hornets - Upturn - 1959 Rockabilly 45

Brilliant, frantic early rock/rockabilly tune from 1959. I found this late last winter on my travels and was thrilled with it because it is so cool! Apparently it is rather obscure, though someone else on youtube before me posted this video and said it got a lot of airplay in Cleveland, so that is why I must of had luck finding such a nice copy. I think Eddie Smith is from somewhere on the east coast.

Damnation of Adam Blessing - Driver - 1970

The flip side to the famed "Back To The River" 45 from 1970. Both "River" & this song "Driver" are from the group's 2'nd LP titled "Second Damnation".

We currently have this fine record for sale in our ebay store!

Damnation of Adam Blessing - Back To The River 45 -

Absolutely bad-ass music out of my home town, Cleveland, Ohio! Call it what you will... Psych or Garage or Hard Rock or Proto-Punk.... whatever the hell it is, is original, viscous, and catchy!

"Back To The River" is a classic and one of their "Hits", though I think the flip side ("Driver") is even more bad-ass. That song will be posted next.

Bob Lind - We May Have Touched - 1968 - Rare Folk Rock 45

Here is the more characteristic flip side to "Goodbye Neon Lines"

Bob Lind - Goodbye Neon Lines - 45 - 1968 Folk Rock

I'm not 100% sure, but this may have been released only as a 45 as I think I have all the LP's Bob Lind released on World Pacific and when I found this 45 this spring I was thrilled since the songs did not sound familiar to me and I truly love the folk-pop stylings of Bob Lind! As such, this is one of Bob's more elusive releases (pardon the pun). This song in particular is rather uncharacteristic of Lind stylistically, but none the less a great piece of 60's rock!

4 Seasons - Beggin' - 45 - Northern Soul - 1967 - Four Seasons

This was the hit, "Beggin'" and is a song the Northern Soul collectors seem to enjoy. Great 4 Seasons song from 1967. The flip side is "Dody", which again, I prefer more than the A side, though this single is solid as hell all around in my opinion!

Yankee Dollar - City Sidewalks - Psych 45 - 1968

Released by Dot (17123) circa 1968. Original US press! "City Sidewalks" is the B side of "Sanctuary", though I enjoy this song more, which seems to be happening to me a lot lately, that I prefer the B side of these odd old singles. Great, rare late 60's Psych. Female vocals in the style of Grace Slick. I quite enjoy the effects employed on this song along with the slightly creepy organ line.

Yankee Dollar - Sanctuary - Psych 45 - 1968

Released by Dot (17123) circa 1968. Original US press! "Sanctuary" is the A side, I am pretty sure. Great, rare late 60's Psych mixed with some garage/frat organ tinkling. Female vocals akin to Jefferson Airplane. Both sides are solid songs of the genre! Hard to find 45 and in fantastic all around condition!

Arthur Epps - There Was a Party - Rare R&B Spark 45 - 1961

Released on Spark in 1961. This is a pretty rare single. The recording you are hearing came straight from the 45 that we sold awhile ago for about $50. As you can hear, the record is in really fantastic shape! Looked and sounded near mint. A true gem for the collector!

T.J. Maxx

While I'm not actually selling any Nick Riley Allstars CD's, I figured I'd still share this video none the less. The NRA were a fine experimental rock band hailing from Lakewood, OH originally at the turn of the century. They broke up 8 or 9 years ago after releasing one fine album and doing a tour or two, though they did a reunion show in December of 2010 to a very enthusiastic group of old fans at The Root Cafe in Lakewood, OH which was a blast!

Old Records

I sell records. Some times people want to hear the records I am listing and/or I want to share the records as I will have noticed youtube is lacking good examples of stuff I have access to. I figured if I am making these simple videos and uploading them to youtube that I might as well collect them all in yet another place for people to enjoy whether they are interested in purchasing stuff from me or not. I hope this blog will be enjoyed by folks who love all sorts of music as this blog doesn't have a focal point other than neat old music of all styles!
